The Martian is a science fiction novel by American author Andy Weir, about an astronaut who is mistakenly thought dead when his crew leaves Mars in search of water. NASA has been funding this project for quite some time now, but the book was only released early in 2015. The release of the movie brought Andy Weir's work to worldwide attention, and he became one of the most well-known authors in this genre since Isaac Asimov. The protagonist "Mark Watney" is based on the real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield, who spent 6 months isolated in the International Space Station. The book and movie were both released in 2015. It is a very well-written and gripping book and has received fantastic reviews from critics and fans alike. An American astronaut named Mark Watney (portrayed by Matt Damon) is stranded on Mars after the crew of his space ship Hermes malfunctions midway through a six-month journey to make contact with NASA's headquarters on Earth. Intermittent radio contact with Earth has been maintained since leaving Earth orbit, but Mark's crewmates insist that rescue missions will not be possible for several months. They begin to deal with the problem of food and water at their location. His rescue is opposed by his crewmates as it will require abandoning exploration of Mars' surface, but Mark realizes that the situation is dire and convinces them to make a run for it on a rover. During this run, Mark dies from a lack of food and water. However, he remains semi-conscious during his journey on the rover, solely able to communicate through hand gestures and writing with Sharpie on his helmet visor. Mark eventually recovers from his illness just as his colleagues at NASA learn that he has survived after all. As they arrive back on Earth, Mark regains consciousness and is patched up by Dr. Vincent Kapoor (portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor) - a very skilled and eccentric NASA medical doctor. It is revealed that NASA has spent $US2.5 billion to rescue Mark and will spend $US4 billion more funding a manned mission back to Mars, with the intent of saving Mark's life. Mark is assigned the job of "special projects director" for the mission, and he spends his time lecturing about his experience on Mars as well as helping out with other aspects of the mission. It turns out that he was not meant to survive on Mars by his fellow astronauts, but a satellite transmission from Earth informed them of a meteorite storm coming their way. Mark then realized that his fellow astronauts could not gain enough energy from solar panels to survive the inevitable storm, but Hermes still had a nuclear reactor, which could provide more energy for them. Mark devised a plan to alter the rocketship so that it would slow down in a trajectory toward Hermes after they launch, and be released in a separate trajectory afterward. These rockets would allow Mark's crewmates to use its nuclear reactor to charge its batteries and have power for several months.
